Introduction

End Goal

By the end of this training module, you should be able to present our Census Persuasion training with ease. Use this training to create Census Ambassadors in your agency and community!

Module 1 - What is the Census?

Module 1 focuses on ensuring you have the base knowledge necessary to train others on Census engagement.

  1. Start by completing the Census Basics eCourse on Moodle through our Community Action Academy.
    • You will need to make an account on Moodle to access the course.
  2. Explore our 2020 Census Toolkit and the accompanying resources.
  3. At this point, you should have basic Census information memorized and be able to answer the following questions with ease:
    • What questions are on the Census?
    • When does the Census start?
    • Why do we do the Census?
    • Who should fill out the Census?
  4. Once you are able to answer these questions with no hesitation, you are prepared to present the first portion of our Census Persuasion training named “What is the Census?”
    • Familiarize yourself with the What is the Census? slide deck.
    • Watch this video to see an example of how this training portion should go.
      • Notice the pacing, language, and focus points of each slide.
      • You can also use this video as a training tool! Simply play the video at the beginning of the training.
  5. Practice, practice, practice! Make sure you are comfortable moving through this portion of the slide deck. Ideally, you would be able to present without even looking at the slides.

Advance to Module 2

Module 2 - Getting Out the Count

In Module 2, you will learn how to present the second portion of the Census Persuasion training: Getting Out the Count. This portion focuses on partnership opportunities and outreach strategies agencies and community members can use to enhance participation in the 2020 Census.

  1. Familiarize yourself with the Getting Out The Count slide deck.
  2. Watch this video to learn the ins and outs of this section of the Census Persuasion training. Lindsay Marsh provides in depth knowledge of opportunities available to local communities and how to get started.
  3. Part of Getting Out the Count is understanding your community. The Census has developed an interactive Hard-to-Count (HTC) Map so you can see the challenges your community will encounter in outreach efforts. This is an excellent opportunity to make the training more interactive by pulling up the map and exploring the local area.
  4. Practice, practice, practice! Make sure you are comfortable going through the presentation information. Ideally, you should be able to do the presentation without looking at the slides.

BONUS! For agencies that provide the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, you can include a section catered specifically to how VITA volunteers can promote the Census.

  1. Familiarize yourself with this VITA slide deck.
  2. Watch this webinar as a model for how to include the information into your presentation.
  3. Check out our VITA and the Census Toolkit for staff and volunteers.
  4. You can incorporate the material into your overall presentation or offer it as a separate training.

Advance to Module 3

Module 3 - Talking to Hard-To-Count Communities

  2. Watch this video to learn the ins and outs of engaging hard-to-count communities. Lindsay Marsh provides in depth knowledge of messaging research and strategies to ensure these populations get counted in the 2020 Census.

    • They can also be used as promotional tools on social media!
  4. Practice, practice, practice! Make sure you are comfortable moving through this portion of the slide deck. Ideally, you would be able to present without even looking at the slides.

Advance to Module 4

Module 4 - Teaching Your Team

Module 4 focuses on how you can convince agencies to start Census engagement efforts and provides easy-to-use tools and ideas. Note: this is not included in the overall slide deck, but is useful to bring up in discussions during trainings.

  1. Not all agencies are able to form their own Census teams and dedicate a full portion of budget and time to Census engagement work. Our goal is to make it easy for agencies to slip in Census engagement work with their everyday operations.
  2. If agencies are looking for quick and easy methods to do Census engagement, they can start by showing a simple training video to their staff and board.
  3. Here’s a list of simple ways agencies can promote Census engagement:

Activity! The training provides an optional brainstorming activity that trainees can do to learn more about their community. Include it in your presentation if you have an extra 15 minutes to spare.
