Children and Families in Trouble: Census Data Show Declining Health Coverage and Enduring Poverty
The number of people with health insurance coverage declined for the first time since 2009, reversing the trend of gains in coverage since the Affordable Care Act was passed. Also, among children, 425,000 more were uninsured in 2018 versus 2017, reversing the trend toward greater coverage. This brief summarizes key findings from a Census report that presents data on income, earnings, income inequality, and poverty in the United States based on information collected by the U.S. Census Bureau in 2019 and earlier Current Population Survey Annual Social and Economic Supplements (CPS ASEC).
Using Big Data to Solve Economic and Social Problems
This course from Opportunity Insights, taught by Raj Chetty and Greg Bruich from Harvard University, provides learning materials introducing applied economics. The course was originally taught at the university and increased gender diversity, as 49% of the students were women. One part of Opportunity Insights’ mission is to train the next generation of researchers and policy leaders on methods to study and improve economic opportunity and other related social problems.

Colorado Rural Rental Housing Preservation Academy
The new Colorado Rural Rental Housing Preservation Academy offered by Enterprise Community Partners, Colorado Health Foundation, and Fannie Mae, is a series of free trainings and peer learning sessions designed to help rural housing providers acquire and/or preserve USDA Rural Development, HUD, LIHTC, and other restricted rental housing in rural Colorado. This Academy will be open to existing owner/operators interested in preserving rental assistance in their properties, or parties interested in acquisition for the purpose of preservation of RA and the affordability of the units. Nonprofit participants and housing authorities will be awarded one-on-one technical assistance to support their efforts for preservation as well as travel stipends to participate in the Academy sessions. The Academy begins April 2020.
