Community Action: A Voice for Change

Thank you for attending! The Partnership’s Annual Convention is the largest gathering of regional, state, and local Community Action Agencies in the United States, drawing more than 1,000 attendees each year. We are at the table with more partners than ever before and our network continues to be at the forefront of program and community development. During this Convention, we will come together to showcase our strengths, strategies, and achievements. We’ll also share our best practices in management, program implementation, and capacity building. There is change ahead of us—for the better—as Community Action evolves, reinvents, and continues to achieve excellence.

Opening Session: Building Belonging in a Time of Othering with john a. powell

Watch john powell’s keynote address from the 2019 Annual Convention. john is the Director of the Haas Institute for a Fair and Inclusive Society and a Professor of Law, African American Studies, and Ethnic Studies at UC Berkeley. john has written extensively on a number of issues including structural racism, racial justice, concentrated poverty and urban sprawl, opportunity based housing, voting rights, affirmative action in the United States, and the needs of citizens in a democratic society.

A Roadmap for Reducing Child Poverty
This session reviews the research on linkages between child poverty and child well-being, and analyzes the poverty-reducing effects of major assistance programs directed at children and families.

Poverty, Equity, and Migration
During this session panelists discussed the current migration crisis and made the case for a unified and immediate humanitarian response. Additionally, culturally informed strategies for helping migrant families navigate institutional barriers and social isolation were highlighted.

National Partners Panel Discussion
In this session, Community Action national partners provided the latest updates in programming, training, and technical assistance. Emerging opportunities and challenges facing the network were also discussed.
